Chloé in her waiting room
In fact she designed that room for you, all of us. We are in a hurry or rush in every aspect of our daily life. We live without sensing or feeling. We need a space or a desired time for experiencing, recording all we perceive and live. Chloé is probably the best DJ in town. She has done such good EPs and remixes and her eclectic sets are world wide known. You can expect anything from her, anytime she is on the booth. She surprised every human being loving electronic music with her debut LP "The Waiting Room". She released it from her label Kill The DJ with Ivan Smagghe. She showed that she is a very good producer and thinker. Her style is unique and she is one of the most important female electronic music in France. A well trained musician and forward thinking electronic music composer. Let's take our time in her new waiting room.

How do you feel about the album and how are the feedbacks so far?

I was working on my album for a long time between gigs, EPs, and remixes, so it took me a while to finish it. I'm already thinking now of the 2nd album. Feedbacks are good, it is good to see people followed me even if it was not a dancefloor album.

Do you have a favourite track in the album? Or a track which has a special story. For example the video is very interesting…
I really love the last one in the album, as it's the last track of the album but it's also an opening track, i love "be kind to me" (the track from the video). I wanted to make an electronic track with the feeling of an organic track.
The video is a project of French movie director Lidia Terki (you can see it’s original version in the Istanbul film festival this year). It s an eperimental short movie with no sounds, except the sounds of the hands, it seemed it really worked with my universe. I've been working with this director on other projects she did.

You slapped all those people who were knowing you just as a regular techno-electro Dj. It was a quite surprise for lots of people? Was it really?
Well, if you see my work in the production, it s not so surprising to have an album like this. In 2001, when i did my first EP (Erosoft, on Karat Records) many people were very surprised, but that was my first EP, since i did other EPs not 100% dancefloor, i worked with contemporary dancers and choregraphers, directors for mivies, so it is not so different i would say. Making an album just give on one project all my ideas of the moment, but today i m already on other things.

It seems that you accepted all of us listeners to the waiting room of your musical palace. Can you just tell us a little bit more about that castle? Is it so dark, scary or shiny, full of gold…?
It's just my work, i like to work on atmospheres, textures, harmonie, much more than on beats, probably that’s why it makes this effects.

How do you see the current electro and techno scene?
It became very big, everyone knows what is electronic music, when i started DJing there weren’t so many parties happening, It was seen as a weird music, with weird people, It's interesting to see how it is everywhere now. It happened the same way for rock music: from the underground to the overground.

What will you say about the current fashion of being more funky, soulful and deep, (which also means to be more analogue and vocalized). People remembered the emotions and guitar riffs in electronic music?
Electronic music is always changing, from acid house, to techno, to deep house, to minimal, then electro, and back to minimal deep... I just play the music i love. There are many good funky, soulfull, deep house tracks that are amazing, that you can play in the middle of an techno set, when you DJ, you tell a story.

You made most of the tracks during touring and some in your home studio. What do you do at the Paris conservatory and your casual life?
I listen to the music i receive, i like not to play the same set all the time, i need to find new things, or play again old EPs i have. I also make electroacoustic music working on some projects totally different, it s a big inspiration.

Are you an activist on gender issues or something like that? The new video and the former album cover with Johan Skugge had the similar perpectives…
We did last year a compilation called "The Dysfunctionnal Family" with Ivan Smagghe on our label, Kill The DJ Records, on the cover we were a bit confusion about our gender, we were resident DJs at Le Pulp in Paris for many years, probably that’s why we were into this. but it’s a general idea complaning about pre-defined targets, that’s why we also made the music not 100% clubbing, it was a mix CD with special music we like.

What inspires you in doing music. Which forms of art and phenomena?
All is inspiring, not only listening to music. For example i called my album "The Waiting Room" because i think today everything has to be fast, you can get an information in a second just on the net, you can download movies and music in a few minutes, we have information everywhere, to many informations. I think it is important to remember to take time sometimes to listen to people...

What are your current favourite labels and producers?
Kill The DJ, Tigersushi , Playhouse etc..
Amy Winehouse, Animal Collective etc...

What about playing in İstanbul again, but this time your album tracks live!?
I would love too, but i need to work on a live!! and i need ... time for that .
